Formats

.htm or .html: HyperText Markup Language.  HTML can be viewed with any web browser.  HTML on its own is not an efficient format to store information.  However, several e-Book formats including the Amazon Kindle, Open eBook, Compressed HM, Mobipocket and EPUB use one HTML file for each book chapter and then Zip compress the files, along with images, metadata and style sheets into one file.  HTML files encompass a wide range of standards and displaying HTML files correctly is extremely complicated.

.epub or Open eBook File: (electronic publication) EPUB is an open XML-based format for digital books that can be viewed with supporting software from a number of different ereaders.  EPUB files have the extension .epub.  EPUB can be read by FBReader, Lexcycle Stanza, Adobe Digital Editions, Sony Reader PRS-505, and after conversion you can read it on Mobipocket Reader and Amazon Kindle.  A list of conversion tools can be found at: http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/epub.

Kindle or .azw: Proprietary format used with Amazon’s reader though more platforms are now accepting the format.  For more information go to: http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wireless-Reading-Generation/dp/B00154JDAI

Plucker: A plucker ebook is an offline, free eBook reader for Palm OS based handheld devices, Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) devices, and PDAs.  Given how a plucker file is created it may contain formatting errors like lines running together.  Gutenberg plucker ebooks do not contain images.  For Plucker downloads, go to: http://www.plkr.org/download.

QiOO Mobile: QiOO Mobile eBook files are a new experimental feature for Project Gutenberg.   QiOO Mobile eBook is a proprietary format which is viewable on most recent mobile phones (Java required). These QiOO Mobile eBook files do not contain images or hyperlinks - they are text only.  For more information, go to: http://ww.qioo.de.

.UTF-8 or Unicode: UTF-8 is suitable for any language, including Asian characters, but needs a display program that knows UTF-8 and you have to install appropriate fonts for the language you are trying to display.  To find programs that work with .UTF-8, go to: http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/utf8.

.txt or Plain Text or US-ASCII encoding: Text files contain unformatted textual data that can be recognized by any text editing or word processing software like Notepad or TextEdit.  It is not suitable for any language except English.  In Project Gutenberg, plain text was generated when they didn't have an UTF-8 encoded plain text version of an ebook.  Many smart phones and Amazon Kindles can also read text files.  In Gutenberg, every ebook is available in plain text format with very few exceptions such as books with math formulas.  For programs that open .text files: http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/txt.

.zip or Compressed files: File compression reduces the size of your download.  If you are on a slow internet connection, consider downloading the file compressed with zip.  Once downloaded you have to uncompress the file before you can use it. To do this use a program like Unzip or WinZip. If you are on a fast internet connection you probably don't want to bother with uncompressing or zip files.  To download WinZip go to: http://www.winzip.com/win/en/index.htm.
